Industrial
University of South Carolina - Biomass Facility
The first facility of its kind on a College Campus

Location: Columbia, SC - USC Campus
Size: 19,000 sq. ft.
Client: Perigon Engineering
This joint project with Perigon Engineering represents the future of campus power plants and was designed to showcase the unique industrial process it houses. Through the gasification of woodchips, this facility generates steam to supplement the campus's current energy power generation system. The building includes a wood storage area, connector area, process area, along with control rooms and a training classroom.
The connector area architecturally ties together the storage and process areas while providing a complete enclosure for the conveyors which transport the wood chips for processing. A harmonic combination of masonry, glass and translucent panels were used to add transparency to the walls and allow the technologically advanced equipment to be easily viewed, all features that give the building character while enabling the project to blend into the existing campus architecture.
